The public transport system
- RTA – Roads and Transport Authority – is an integrated multimodal authority regulating and organising transport (collective and individual) in the whole emirate. Only few cities in the world has a so integrated approach (ex: London, Singapore)
- Dubai has ambitious plans (US
D 10 billions by 2020) for the development of public transport
- The city offers all modes of public transport: metro, tramway (to open in 2011), buses of all types, marine transport, taxis.
- Dubai has the world longest driverless metro network (the first of its kind in the region)
- The city offers an integrated contactless smartcard system (called “Nol”) covering all modes and parking as well (for P&R)
- Dubai launched a number of initiatives aiming at reducing car traffic such as “Salik” (road pricing), “Sharekni” (car pooling and company transport plans for employees), “Wojhati” (journey planner), etc.
- Innovation in the approach to business : station naming auction, A/C bus shelters on private concession, private services of local public transport systems in new developed lands, etc
- Dubai public transport fleet is equipped and managed with state of the art IT tools
- Dubai encourages the local business community and social sector to reduce car traffic by organising the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport
Market perspectives for UITP and its members

- In addition to Dubai, the MENA region is one the most promising regions in term of public transport development. All the region’s countries are either finalising studies, designing or even implementing ambitious projects (see the list of on-going and planned investments).
- All these projects will need to supply infrastructure, vehicles, rolling stock, ticketing systems, IT systems, etc. They will also need studies and technical assistance and later operation. It is a huge market for manufacturers and service suppliers from the whole world as the region is very open to business and trade.
- Taxation system (very low (or no) taxes compared to Europe for example) encourages business in the region
- Most of the global transport actors have opened (or are considering opening) branches in the region
Venue and Logistics
- The venue is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport from hotels and from the airport
- The venue hosted many large events in a variety of sectors and with an international audience
- The venue offers a wide range of facilities: conference rooms, exhibition halls, offices, secretarial rooms, restaurants, etc.
- Dubai offers a wide range of hotels with service standard higher than the world average at equivalent price and most of them being very close to the venue and easily accessible by public transport from the airport
- Dubai offers a variety of places for social and networking events
