Boosting public transport: Action!
Foreword
The preservation of attractive and competitive cities for people and business requires a massive shift to Public Transport. In 2025, public transport is the preferred choice in urban mobility policies and it provides an attractive alternative to cars. Compared to 2009, public transport has succeeded in doubling its market share worldwide.
The UITP Congress will present audacious developments and radical paradigm shifts. Dubai is the ideal host for the 59th World Congress. With its extensive multimodal public transport, it is recognised for its forward-looking and daring mobility policy: public transport modal split shall soar from 6% in 2005 to 30% in 2020.
The Dubai Congress will review the priorities identified in the PTx2 strategy and will be the first important milestone to take a halt and consider what has been achieved and what is still to do. The entire supply chain is mobilised. But it is not enough: strong and clear messages are required to obtain support from external stakeholders. The Congress offers the opportunity to share and refine these messages.
Dubai is also a gateway to the Middle East, a region with booming prospects for public transport: with over 60 billion Euros projects approved, it is an ideal place to showcase your products and expertise and to sow the seeds of your business of tomorrow. Further, the Congress and Exhibition will be an opportunity to virtually “touch” new products and services, grasp innovation and to share views and approaches between different regions.
We look forward to seeing you for this exciting event, the first UITP World Congress & Exhibition in the region.

Public Transport: the smart green solution
Doubling global market share by 2025!
Recognising public transport’s role in boosting economic growth while respecting the environment, in reducing congestion and in providing mobility for everyone in ever-growing cities, in June 2009 UITP launched a worldwide strategy to double public transport market shares by 2025. The strategy identifies the key areas to be addressed by all mobility stakeholders (governments, operators, authorities, the supply industry and investors), preferably in an integrated manner, in order to achieve this ambition.
UITP members around the world are showing leadership by setting ambitious targets to improve the mobility offer in their cities, and ambitious master plans are being drafted, setting market share targets for public transport.
The full UITP strategy is outlined in the document ‘Public transport: the smart green solution’ available on the UITP website: www.uitp.org/advocacy/public_transport.cfm
The business and economic climate has become very uncertain and unstable: in some places, unemployment is skyrocketing and public deficits are reaching record levels; others seem to remain unaffected and feature defiant growth rates. This has an impact on our industry and our ambitions. It is tricky to predict the evolution. But whether you are facing painful downturn or robust growth, PTx2 provides answers to many of your challenges. Congress sessions will show you how with presentations from around the world.
The Congress programme was largely designed along the strategic pillars of PTx2. Sessions directly derived from the strategy are indicated in the programme with the recognisable logo :
